Smile makeovers; are they really worth all the hassle?

April 1, 2010 · Posted In: Dental Care

A smile makeover can have benefits that are far beyond having a great white smile. Hollywood style smiles are a great asset to have, and up until recently we have been put off them because of the cost. In recent years there has been a technological revolution not seen since the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. A lot of dental work like teeth whitening can now be performed by cosmetic dentistry experts, you can have a treatment in your lunch hour, and in the High Street. Some dentists even do home visits. The cost has come down a lot due to the competition, and that is a good thing. Tooth whitening is a simple treatment that starts with an inspection of the teeth and gums, if you`ve good gums then you can have it. A rubber gum shield is put in your mouth to protect the gums lips and tongue from the intense light that will be trained on your teeth, the shield also keeps your teeth fronts exposed. A gel is coated onto the teeth and the light reacts with this to produce the bleaching effect that will give you that Hollywood smile. The treatment last for an hour and is given in three stages, each one lasts for fifteen minutes. Then the technician will give you a diet sheet, it contains a list of drinks and certain foods that will stain your teeth if you don`t avoid them for a few weeks. The teeth will feel a bit sensitive for a few days as well, but it isn`t painful, just uncomfortable. The cost is anywhere between £200 and £400 depending on the local competition so shop around. If all that’s too much aggravation then you could try a home bleaching kit, these are available from most chemist shops. You get all you need in the kits. You take the gum shield and soften it in hot water, this is normal for sporting gum shields. You now make a mould of it by biting into it and leaving an impression of your teeth in it. Taking the bleach, you mix some up and pour it into the mould. Next bite on it again and coat your teeth. Leave it for a set time and rinse both your teeth and the mould, you can use it again and again. As with the intense light method you have to adhere to a list of foods and drinks to avoid for a few weeks.
