The Development of EDI

Contrary to what is being experienced now, the EDI use in the past had tens of issues and complications. For instance, in order to reliably apply it in the business scene or any interchange, there had to be a dual agreement between the participating companies on which regulations to follow. It was only after the contract was sealed that a trade would be possible in the subsequent days after the pact. The shortcoming to this was that the different coding made by the initial two principles could not be effectively understood by a third party because of the dissimilar coding, some which even used foreign languages. So; in reality, you could not exchange information with more that one associate.
With this being a major challenge, the need for standardization became imminent. In the year 1968, the first significant breakthrough was made towards the realization of a regulated code. At the time, it was initiated by a group of elites in a Transportation Data Coordinating Committee that came to produce the TDCC standards. However, the approach was miscalculated as it only served the American style. It was then that the Electronic Data Interchange Association united to constitute the now universally accepted version of the EDI systems and regulations.
